Magic: The Gathering's Final Fantasy Set Introduces Fishing Minigame, New Summons, and Transforming Cards
Magic: The Gathering's Final Fantasy crossover introduces innovative mechanics and card transformations that honor both franchises' legacy. The set features double-faced cards representing iconic character transformations, like Cecil transitioning from Dark Knight to Redeemed Paladin, and Garland becoming Chaos.
A unique fishing minigame arrives through "Sidequest: Catch a Fish," featuring Final Fantasy 15's Noctis. This card allows players to "fish" cards from their deck, keeping artifacts or creatures and earning food tokens for healing. It transforms into "Cooking Campsite," a land card providing white mana and creature buffs.
The set introduces a new summon mechanic, adapting Final Fantasy's iconic summoning system using saga-style effects. Summons like Shiva act as creature cards while providing different effects over multiple turns. For example, Shiva can stun creatures and draw cards while being a 4/5 creature for combat.

The collaboration, developed over four years, includes cards from all 16 mainline Final Fantasy games, featuring over 100 different creatures. It represents the largest collection of Final Fantasy artwork ever in a single game.
Launching June 13, the set will be standard-legal and includes four preconstructed Commander decks themed around different Final Fantasy games:
- Final Fantasy 6 (Commander: Terra)
- Final Fantasy 7 (Commander: Cloud)
- Final Fantasy 10 (Commander: Tidus)
- Final Fantasy 14 (Commander: Y'shtola)
